I clean my apartment from top to bottom every other Saturday.  That means I get on my hands and knees and scrub like no one else’s business.  Unlike 99% of the population, I actually enjoy cleaning.  It’s a good workout for me, especially when I get to the bathroom, and from there, the tub.

Oh lord, my tub.

I’ve lived in the same apartment for over three years now, and as the clock ticked by the days, my tub got yellower and yellower.  Nothing would save it.  Nothing would restore it to its once-beautiful porcelain shine.  I’ve tried Comet, Tilex, CLR, bleach and none of it ever worked.  I gave up hope and decided to live with a yellow tub for the past year.

I’ve been phasing out chemical cleaning products in my home.  My Tilex is all gone.  So is my Comet.  I’m not sure I’ll ever get rid of the CLR, but I’m not using it anymore ever since it gave me a chemical burn.  I’ve decided to go cheap and natural.

I cleaned my entire apartment today with water, baking soda and vinegar.

And guess what?  HOLY SHIT MY TUB IS NO LONGER YELLOW!  That’s right folks.  I made a slippery little paste of baking soda and vinegar, threw it all over my tub, let it soak while I cleaned the kitchen and then scrubbed the snot out of it.  I’ve never seen my bathtub looking this good.  I don’t think it was even this white when I first moved in.

So yes, thank you.  Thank you so much vinegar and baking soda.  I will clean with you from now on, and not just because you don’t give me chemical burns or pollute my water, but because you’re as cheap as a second-rate hooker.

And I love it.

  1. Wow. I never would have pegged you as an individual that knew the prices of various items in the sex economy. ;-)

I try to clean with vinegar and baking soda as well. We actually bought that 12 pound bag of baking soda. Pretty useful quantity if you are going to use a quite a bit.

Glad to hear that your tub is cleaning. You’ve inspired me to give it a shot on ours.

  2. I wash cloth diapers with vinegar and baking soda, but never thought to clean the tub!

@ Zach – Let me know how it goes with the tub. Glad I could be a cleaning inspiration! I’ll have to look for the 12 pound back of baking soda myself.

@ Erin – I have no doubt in my mind that vinegar and baking soda can clean just about anything.
