My Farmer's Market Haul

People oftentimes complain that there is nothing to do in Northwest Indiana… that if you’re looking for fun and if you’re looking for culture you have to go to Chicago.  I say, “That’s totally not true!”  I grew up in Northwest Indiana, so maybe I’m biased, but it bothers me when people slam Indiana (especially The Region part of it) for being a bunch of white, hateful, redneck hicks that drink beer out of the back of their pick-ups.

That isn’t to say there aren’t people like that here.  Also, I’m not anyone to judge the happiness and fulfillment of other people’s lives either.  BUT not everyone is like that.

This morning two of my best buds and I went to the Chesterton Farmer’s Market and picked up some pretty neat swag.  I love going to farmer’s markets, and I’m blessed with the fact that this one is so close to where I live.

It’s fun!  There are so many local vendors offering a wide array of stuff.  I’m mostly in it for the food items, since I’m a delicious, good-food-lovin’ junkie, but there are other things available as well.  Fresh cut flowers, handmade soaps, locally made cheeses, tea, honey, wood carvings… the list goes on and on and on!

If you want to stay on my good side, don’t give NW Indiana flack and whine about how there is nothing to do and nothing worthwhile to see. It will seriously piss me off.  You’ve more than likely have not looked hard enough.  Albeit, it isn’t the same as walking down Michigan Avenue while accosted by the homeless, but it’s something fun for anyone of any age.  And feel free to bring your dog!  It’s a dog-loving environment.

I’ll be sure to take pictures at the Market the next time I’m there.

Today’s haul includes: two bunches of fresh-cut flowers, sweet cherries, local honey, cream earl grey tea, locally made cashew butter and whole wheat bread made by a cute little nun.

Feedback is love.

I love your post and the pic is sooo lovely! You totally ROCK my friend! Enjoy today’s haul, you’ll be eatin’ good for days!

  2. Nice find at the market. We still haven’t been down many times to ours. Things have been pretty busy this summer.

I tend to give the Lafayette a hard time due to the fact that it struggles to have something to do consistently. However, we did just find out about an open-mic that is every Thursday at our local Lafayette Theater. It is mainly guitar slinging singer/songwriters and the occasional percussionist on bongos. I’ll see if I can’t add some comedy.

Keep us abreast of your local events!

@ Tia – I’m really enjoying the cherries. They’re so sweet and delicious!

@ Zach – That’s neat you found a place with an open mic. They usually are dominated by singer / songwriters, as you have noted, so it’s good that you’re willing to bring a little variety to the greater Lafayette area. :D
