On becoming a STEM Mentor – Day 176
August 3rd, 2010
Today I met with Cathie from Discoveries Unlimited for an interview. Not a job interview or anything like that, but for an interview on becoming a STEM mentor. I think she likes me; I’m going in for a day of orientation and a background check on Saturday. I swear I am not a criminal.
It’s exciting. It’s a way for me to give back to my community, maybe enrich someone’s life. Make a positive change. I love web design and development almost as much as I love writing, and it will be great to share my experiences, my successes and failures with someone young who is interested enough to listen.
When I was still employed with my previous employer, I was asked to consider the program in the fall of 2009. I dismissed it thinking I didn’t have the time or the drive to commit to something huge like that. It was a whole semester long, and I was lazy. In the spring I looked at the website again, considering mentorship, but then reconsidered since I was no longer “traditionally” employed. I didn’t think they would take a creative bum. Then Kathy Sipple said I should consider the program out of the blue. Maybe some forces are at work here, or it’s just a strange string of coincidences, but this time I am ready to follow through.
And even though I’m not “traditionally” employed, I am still welcomed to be a mentor. It must mean I have something to give to future generations. Not only do I hope my mentee will learn from me, but I will also learn from her. It are adventures like this that make me happy to be alive.
Being both left-brained and right-brained is just sheer awesome. Way to rock the whole muscle in my skull.

Wonderful, good for you. You will be great. Please blog about the experience so we all can follow.
I will be sure to do just that!
Woot sauce! Good for you, your mentee will be a very lucky person to have you as a mentor.
I very much hope so!
