New blog theme in progressThis morning I was bit by the design bug, wanting to do a new design for a blog/portfolio deal. I’m not sure if I will use it myself, give it to a friend or just keep it around for practice. There are a lot of things yet I want to try with WordPress 3.0.

I like getting my hands dirty. I like breaking things. I am definitely not afraid to push buttons. It’s what database backups are for, or one better, localhosts. If you don’t tinker, how will you ever learn?

I was thinking today about my friend Atom and his somewhat, kind of recent (okay, maybe not recent at all) affinity to keeping things simple in design. No unneeded flourishes. Not a lot of images. Using CSS to its maximum potential. I like designing and developing like that because for me it’s a bit like a puzzle.

“How can I create this great effect with only code?”

I owe much to the people who helped me get even better with my HTML, CSS, PHP, jQuery and all that good development stuff. Atom and Brian come to mind a lot. I’m glad they had the patience and the gall (friendly gall, mind you) to tell me I wasn’t doing something right, or I could clean up the code this way, or that I was a straight up a lazy ass when I built something in tables because it took less time. I’ll never forget that day, Brian. Never! I wanted to prove you wrong so bad, and I did. And I got better. And now I thank you for that.

People who can code have always been very attractive to me. It must be my geek resonating something fierce, but it’s okay. I like it. If someone tells me the z-index of their love is over 9000, then I’d rather take that one confession than a dozen roses any day.

But only if the position is relative.

Feedback is love.

  1. Will you be releasing any of your WP themes for public consumption?

I’d like to play around with this one for my professional (teaching) website.

    • This one most likely will be public, since it’s test more than anything. I’m designing and coding it with a friend in mind, but I doubt this experiment will be the one I give to her.

I haven’t started the WP code yet, but I hope to very soon. If you ever want any of my other themes, I can give them to play around with, including this one. I think the newness of it has worn off and I can toss it around freely. :)

      Just let me know.
