Writing Journey – Day 05
February 12th, 2010
When I obsess about producing and keeping on a strict schedule, Rahsaan is always there to slap some sense into me.
“Sometimes producing every moment you can isn’t for the best.”
Paraphrased at best, but it’s pretty much what he said. I have trouble taking that few couple steps back and just enjoying life. It shouldn’t all be about what I can produce. Sometimes the greatest works are created when thoughts simmer for awhile, allowing for each individual idea to mix and meld with the other. Truly superior stuff.
If I keep cranking out cheeseburgers, all I will have the end is fast food with a lot of empty calories.
Despite the laid back pace and different schedule, I accomplished quite a bit today. The short story I’m writing is shaping up into something workable, currently at about 3,000 words. I’m curious to see what will happen in the end, because as of right now, I just don’t know. Everything is a mystery.
And I really like mysteries.

Wow. Looks like you splurged on Day 05! Soup, sandwich, Mudslide, Red Lobster! Treat yourself nicely, but don’t blow it all away. ;-)
I liked those typography exercises. Pretty neat stuff. What was the name of the book you were using?
Glad that the Willow Tree by Hubert Selby, Jr. came in. I have not read that one yet, but anxiously await to hear what you think. I do not own any of his works, but Last Exit to Brooklyn was a crazy, depraved trip into the impoverished and working class of Brooklyn. Excellent read.
I really enjoy these videos, especially today’s. You were taking us out and about and showing us where you work—inspiring writers everywhere!
What was that zine you were using for prompts?
Mary actually bought me the dinner at Red Lobster. It was my “quitting your job” present. I have her to thank for the delicious mudslide.
The book that had the typography exercises in it is called Designing with Type. I’m sure Rahsaan got it at B&N. Maybe your local library has it. :)
I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. People seem to really like them, so I will work hard to make them a daily thing. I mean, everyone loves a good video! Even if it’s just me rambling and showing off what books I’m reading.
The zine is called Marbles, created by my lovely friend Sandy.
Good advice from Rahsaan. You have to mix things up a bit. Recharge those batteries.
As for treating yourself to lunch at the coffee shop, it is something you should do now and again. Money isn’t something you should worry about. I find that it always comes when I need it. It seems that some people who focus on not having enough money never do have enough.
Keep those videos coming! = )
That idea of taking a break every now and then, wasting time, letting your batteries recharge, all that… The Bible calls that “Sabbath.” It’s good for you. It’s wired into the fabric of creation.
Maybe we can talk more about that over tacos sometime. :)
