Congratulations on 25,000 words – Day 77
April 26th, 2010
In terms of NaNoWriMo that is only half the novel, but knowing that I’ve made it to 25,000 words makes me happy. I’m lucky to stick with a project for that long. Usually I abandon things, though I won’t count abandonment against me. Sometimes I come back. Most of the time I don’t.
I was thinking today about writers who’ve influenced me in terms of style, and the one that has always stuck out in my mind is Tim O’Brien. The passage from today’s video was from In the Lake of the Woods, one of my all-time favorite books.
I remember having to read that novel in 11th grade, floored at how beautiful O’Brien could make simple language. He seemed to despise fluff and five-dollar words, yet he was artful enough to show and not tell with the most simple of phrases. I’ve always tried to pay homage to him in my writing, thinking, “Is this something that Tim O’Brien would write himself? Would he approve?”
Such an amazing author. If you have not read any of his works, I suggest picking up a book or two. The Things They Carried is a great set of short stories to start with.
Tomorrow I’m going to start a painting. I’m excited.

Looking forward to seeing the painting. = )
Do you have a hole somewhere around your door? Or maybe by the air conditioner? The wasps in my room were not coming in from my room, but from the window in the hall.
When I looked at the screen in the extra bedroom I did notice a hole in it, so maybe they’re getting in through there. I think once the flower blooms fall off the trees, the problem will be a little less.
Congrats on hitting the 25000 mark!
