Writing Journey – Day 01

February 8th, 2010

Today marked the start of my new life.

The alarm on my phone went off at 6:30; I still had it programmed for when I got up for work. I shut it off and went back to sleep, finally waking up at about 7:30. Not bad, but a half hour later than I would have liked.

I showered, dressed and  made waffles for breakfast, something I once had no time for during the week. I started reading at about 8:30. Again, a half hour later than I wanted, but when I was working at my desk job, 8:30 was about the time I got settled in with my tea and whatever I could scrounge for breakfast.

Justified!

That’s really about it. I spent most of the day reading Stephen King’s On Writing. (There was a morning interlude to finish up reading two chapters of a Voltron fanfic, but that’s something completely different and indulgent. Nevertheless, I have no regrets.) I also found it in me to meet my friends at the gym, make lunch and go grocery shopping for dinner.

There was one thing that got my blood pumping today, and it was totally unexpected. As I read King’s book, I was hit with ideas. Memories. Little flashes of my childhood. I wrote them all down, taking breaks from the book to hastily write in my little notebook. It was fun. I think I will use the snippets for a zine.

Day one was a success. What will day two bring?

Feedback is love.

  1. I know one thing Day 2 will bring: dollar tacos! :)

And I know I already asked you this on Twitter, but I’ll ask you here, too: Why did you film this on the kitchen floor? Seems like an interesting choice… :)

    • As was discussed at $1 taco night, it was filmed on the floor because I was making dinner, and my kitchen also (sadly) has better lighting than anywhere else in my apartment, save the bathroom.

Maybe I will do another video in the kitchen just to rile you up!

    Zines rock

    See ya Wednesday.

You should also consider a cookzine.

  3. Congratulations on the successful day! I found it difficult to write down all of my ideas, which is why I purchased my initial voice recorder—now I’m hooked on them!

I can’t wait to see what you come up with using those ideas you wrote down. If you need any help or are taking any submissions for your zine, let me know. I want to help you out. Hell, I could even distribute the thing around here.

Please let us know how Day 02 went! Don’t forget to call 312-DRY-TOFU!

    • I like writing things down. I think it also makes it easier for me to come back to and find things. I don’t know how well I could sift to audio to find a specific idea of mine.

I may take you up on the distribution. Or maybe we can collab on a zine. I would like to come down and see you soon. We can talk then. :)

    Woot! Success!
If you are looking for more books on writing I saw one at the library that sounded interesting. The author is Jessica Morrell. She is a writing coach and has many books on the subject. You can check them out on Amazon.

  5. Nice work Laura!

Don’t buy the books though, use your library instead!
