Writing Journey – Day 04

Written with a pen in hand by Nichole

I took a deep breath, stepped back and then lunged forward into two hours of writing. I sort of scribbled the beginnings of a short story in a Moleskine and did a writing exercise via Sandy’s zine. It helped a lot in confronting the… monster of writer’s block. Despite having written a bit these past couple days, I still feel very much stuck. Hopefully, with the help of some exercises, I can wipe the mud from my writing goggles and get back on course.

I keep teasing with my writings, so I promise to post at least a little something soon. At the very least I’ll scan my notebook. Then you can see my messy writing at work. Ha!

Everyone has been coming up with some great suggestions for books to read next. Please keep them coming. I’m going back to the library tomorrow to return some things, so I want to pick up new books as well.

What people have said about this post:

  1. Glad it helped, darling! Let me know how the rest work out. :) xx

And oh my god. You’re like, the fastest reader I know. It takes me at least a week to get through a book written for a 15-year-old reading level :(

    • I really like that little zine. I’m striving to do an exercise or two a day, to get myself warmed up and ready to write.

I read at a pretty quick pace, but I know some people who read a lot faster. I like to enjoy, so I’ll hold back a little bit for the sake of aesthetic appreciation. :)

  2. So THAT’s what you mean by “zine”? Huh. Are they all so tiny?

The only time I bumped into anyone who had created a ‘zine, it was just a homemade magazine. This was a guy I knew from high school back in the very early ’90′s (graduated in ’92). His was basically magazine-sized…

  3. Well now I know who’s zine that was! Congratulations on starting a story. Keep them coming and you will produce something you really enjoy.

With our improv, we have to get warmed up and make the characters before the really interesting scenes happen. Do not get discouraged if the start of the story is crap—edit and make the middle the new beginning. ;-)

    • The stories will flow like wine. Or bloody marys. Something like that I’m sure.

I usually like to get to know my characters beforehand, but this time I just dove right in. Something different. Like you said, if I’m not satisfied with what I have, just chop it up and make the middle the new beginning. :)

      I like smilies without noses.

  4. I look forward to reading your daily blogs and watching your videos.
I am so excited for you. Sounds like your warming up your wings and getting ready to soar!
